Can Breastfeeding Moms Get the COVID-19 Vaccine?

Although breastfeeding women were excluded from the initial clinical trials on the Covid-19 vaccine, but still experts recommend that they receive the vaccine.

Most health experts advise that nursing women receive the coronavirus vaccine. But still it is better to consult the healthcare provider to know the benefits as well as the risks of taking the vaccine.  

In most cases, pregnant and nursing  women are excluded from the vaccine clinical trials because experts don't  understand the risks for babies. These babies can be affected through their mom’s breast milk. 

When the breastfeeding women takes the Covid19 vaccine, she will potentially gain protection from either getting the coronavirus or will have less severe symptoms if she got the virus. 

By comparing other vaccines on nursing moms, it reflected that the antibodies produced by the vaccinated mom pass through her breast milk and may provide protection for her baby.

However, if you’re still confused whether to take the vaccine or not ; it’s better to consider the following.

First, ask your healthcare provider in the context of your personal risk since each case differ from the other.For example, breastfeeding mothers that have underlying health problems like diabetes or lung disease can be affected by a severe form of Covid19. In this case, the nursing mom you may be more inclined to get the vaccine .

In addition, if the breastfeeding mom has a high-risk job, then it’s better to get vaccinated. For example, healthcare worker and grocery store cashier have higher probability of getting the virus.
